What We Do

Freshman Retreat

All of the Teaching Fellows that enter into Lenoir-Rhyne's program reflect happily on their Freshman Retreat. Freshman Retreat is a three daylong experience that Lenoir-Rhyne's new class of Teaching Fellows spend together. During these three days, the Freshman Teaching Fellows get to know one another and their fellow upperclassmen, collect their new laptops, and receive an introduction to LR's Teaching Fellows program.

Educational Forums

Lenoir-Rhyne's Teaching Fellows have the exciting opportunity of attending a variety of educational forums. These forums are organized and hosted by the Teaching Fellows Educational Committee. The committee works hard to give Lenoir-Rhyne an exceptional showcase of what being a teacher truly means. This years series will begin when the seniors discuss their findings of the Irish school system on 14 September 2012.

Social Events

As the Teaching Fellows program grows at Lenoir-Rhyne, the need to bring the group together has also grown. The Social Committee plans a variety of activities and parties for the Teaching Fellows to participate in. All 75 Teaching Fellows come together to engage in each other's company.

Alternative Spring Break

As sophomores, the Lenoir-Rhyne Teaching Fellows give up their spring break to travel to an area that needs assistance. In the past, LR Teaching Fellows have traveled to Florida to work for Habitat for Humanity and Washington DC to work with Luther Place Memorial Church and N Street Village to contribute to society throught community service. Although they are asked to give up their vacation, the Teaching Fellows agree that it is well worth the sacrifice.

Traveling Experiences

As rising juniors, Teaching Fellows have the opportunity to visit another country.  Junior Experience allows Teaching Fellows to take an independent journey to enrich their individual development as a future teacher.  Opportunities include working at a summer camp in Maryland, helping with the North Carolina Special Olympics, visiting a variety of locations abroad, and many more.  The end of one's junior year as a Teaching Fellow at Lenoir-Rhyne University is full of excitement. Juniors will travel to another country to visit one of its school systems. Lenoir-Rhyne's first class of juniors will be traveling to Germany. This experience will greatly benefit a Teaching Fellow as he or she prepares to enter the diverse world of teaching.

Community Service

Teaching Fellows at Lenior-Rhyne University are encouraged to complete a certain amount of community service. During one's four years as a Teaching Fellow at LR, he or she can expect a plethora of opportunities to participate in community service. The Teaching Fellow's Service Committee organizes activities such as participating in Operation Christmas Child and Relay for Life, working in a soup kitchen, and working closely with the Salvation Army. It is truly a blessing to work so closely with the Hickory community.

Tutoring Hours

Becoming a teacher requires that one complete a certain amount of tutoring while training to enter the work place. The Lenoir-Rhyne Teaching Fellows live up to this expectation. LR's Teaching Fellows are expected to complete a minimum of twenty hours a year. This opportunity fuels the LR Teaching Fellows to perform at their best in the classroom.

More Opportunities

Along with all of these Teaching Fellows activities, the Lenoir-Rhyne cohort is heavily involved in other school activities, groups, and functions. Examples of these activities include playing sports, being involved in Greek life, being a part of Lenoir-Rhyne's A Cappella Choir, participating in Lenoir-Rhyne's theatre group called the Lenoir-Rhyne Playmakers, joining one of Lenoir-Rhyne's various musical ensembles, and joining a variety of clubs and organizations that the University offers. The Teaching Fellows of Lenoir-Rhyne are incredibly well rounded. They enjoy a variety of activities.
