ESL
English as a Second Language
Lenoir-Rhyne and the Department of Education and Counseling are committed to improving the quality of life of citizens in this region. This commitment must include the awareness, understanding and support of the needs of a multi-ethnic community. One way we are meeting this responsibility is by offering a "licensure only" preparation program for teachers of English as a Second Language. The ESL Licensure Program provides teachers holding any current North Carolina teaching license the opportunity to make use of the college's resources and experiences while they prepare for service in a culturally diverse society and workplace.
The PreK-12 ESL Licensure Program approved by NCSDPI will meet the needs of following:
- public school professionals who work with the growing school population of children and parents who are linguistically and culturally different;
- prospective educators who want to prepare for licensure in more than one area;
- ESL tutors in the public and private schools;
- prospective teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) seeking employment abroad;
- social services personnel working with populations having limited English language proficiency.
